I absolutely LOVe shooting other photographer’s babies! Not only do i get to hang out with some of my closest “photog” buddies, I get to snuggle on their little ones! Double the awesome!!!
It’s so nice knowing that not only, other photographer’s love my work enough to book a session with me, but that it’s OK to be friends with other photographers! Photography is such a dog eat dog industry now, and it’s so hard to trust local photographers. We seem to have a real great group here, who support and encourage eachother, and are always willing to lend an ear when one of us needs to vent.I love the fact that we can refer clients to eachother, and not get competitive. We can shoot eachother, with no alterior motives. We are each good at something, and I personally, would rather refer out to someone who I KNOW is going to do an amazing job, than shoot something that isn’t my strong point, JUST for the money.
I especially LOVE when I hear that one of them is expecting a new little bundle!!!
This sweet girl belongs to Gerad’s Photography, located here, in Lewiston. She is extra special, because we’re birthday buddies!!She just turned a year old, and I still get tagged in her pictures. Her daddy is pretty proud of her, and still swears that I taught her how to perfectly fold her little hands. hehee!!!!
This little chunk muffin belongs to Stellar Styles Photography, who is also located in Lewiston. I met her mama through Amy McCall Photography, and we hit it off. (I absolutely adore both these photographers.) They are so sweet, and both amazingly talanted.
These beautiful girls belong to my partner in crime.. Meshelle Photography. An amazing newborn photographer, located in Spokane. We both started about the same time, and instead of being intimidated by eachother, we reached out to eachother, and became really good friends. We’ve watched eachother grow, as well as watched eachothers families grow. She drove down from Spokane, in a blizzard, to capture Piper’s birth, then drove down again, two weeks later, to help me with her newborn photos. THAT is a good friend!!!! <3
I can’t wait to see who is going to be adding to their family next!
So I have this great new vendor, who sent me an awesome new floor to try out. They had explained it to me via email, which sounded pretty cool so I thought I’d give it a shot.
When i got the floor, I was blown away… Not only was it amazing, it was REAL! Like REAL wood!! Say what?!?
Yeah. Real wood, super easy to lay out, and crazy lightweight. I will be honest here…. I drooled a little.
It has a handy little strap that when wrapped up, Velcro’s together and holds it shut, making it super easy to store and transport.
When you lay the floor out, it literally accordion fold’s out, and you slide each board a tad to line up.
Pretty amazing right?!?!
I was able to use it during my last session, and fell in love. I promise, you will too… Did I mention it comes in different colors too?!? I think I need one of each!!
Be sure to go check them out! Bluebird Props on Facebook!
This is a subject that has been weighing on my mind for a while now, and I have gone back and forth wondering if I should even say anything, or keep it to myself. I have wondered what others will think, and wondered if people will think I failed. Because of that, I have decided to go ahead and talk about my future plans for SKP.
As most of you know, I have an amazing commercial space, which I love everything about. I love the location, I love my light, I love the size, I love the layout, and I love my landlords. I love having a separation between home life, and business life. I don’t love the amount of money I am spending to be there every month. When I moved my business, I thought it would be a great opportunity to get more business. Having the street frontage, people would see me, therefor I would book more, right? Well, not really. My clients typically book me before they even realize where my business is actually located. (Yes, I had a lightbulb moment)I’m sure you are wondering where I am going with this, or you are already assuming where this post is headed… So with that being said, as of August 1st, 2014, I will be moving my business back to my home studio where I started out. BUT, it doesn’t end there. This is a temporary move. Confused?
Let me explain. My husband and I have decided we want to build a home. With that home, we will be building a brand new studio for SKP! Exciting huh?!? We have a lot picked out, a floor plan picked out, and have the basic layout of the new studio already figured out, but there is a catch. When going to see about getting a construction loan, we found out that the banks are MUCH stricter than they were just 5 years ago, and while we were approved, it wasn’t enough without cutting corners on our dream home. When building, you surely don’t want to cut those hardwood floors you love.Right? So, by moving the business home for 12-18 months, we can take that money I have been paying in space rent, and put that towards bills. Pay off my vehicle, yada yada….. In the end, we should be going into the building stage debt free. Yay!
So what about the “home studio” you might wonder? What about the entire experience? Well, while I will be moving from 1,200sq feet down to 500sq feet (Eek!) it is still a dedicated space, separate from our home. You will still be in a professional environment, and you will still get the same excellent service you have grown to expect with SKP. the only difference is that you will be driving a few blocks farther. While this isn’t my ideal situation, it will be VERY worth it in the end… Sometimes you have to sacrifice a little, to get a lot.
Hopefully with this post, clients and future clients will understand why I have made this choice. A difficult one, to say the least! I am excited to build my new custom studio, and it can’t come fast enough… For someone who works with babies all day and loves it, patience is not something I was blessed with. Lol! I have to continuously remind myself that this will be worth it in the end…. I will finally have an office in my new home, and the new studio will have some pretty awesome things in it as well. =)
In the meantime, here are some old photos I have dug up of my home studio. (Excuse the crappy cell phone shots)
Thanks for taking the time to read this..
I am excited to keep all my fans involved in this upcoming process, so be watching for blog posts regarding our building process!
When I started my photography business four years ago, I would have never imagined this is where it would take me… Things blossomed… They flourished beyond my wildest dreams. I remember walking through the halls in St. Joe’s Family beginnings shortly after I moved to Lewiston to visit a friend who had just had a baby… I remember thinking to myself.. “Wow… This is where I would LOVE to have my work displayed someday,” never really thinking it was even a remote possibility. Fast forward three years… I’m sitting in my livingroom not doing much of anything, when I get a phone call from my assistant… All I remember her saying is, “Stephanie.. You’re never gonna believe this. Family beginnings wants your work in their rooms.” I’m pretty sure my jaw hit the floor at that moment. All of my hard work… All the bumps in the road, had led to this. I was speechless… Flatted… and beyond excited.
So here it is… Still a work in progress, but looking amazing.
The waiting room
As you walk into the family Beginnings
Some canvas wraps in the hallways
They even have framed 8×10′s all over the place.. How cute are they?!?!?
Of course my sweet miss Piper has her own canvas wrap hanging.
We are still working on hanging more… It’s slowly, but surely getting there. Every time I walk in there, I am still in awe that those are MY pieces of art hanging in these hallways. I am humbled, and honored. Thank you to all my clients for trusting me with your sweet babies. Without you, I would not be where I am today. Thank you to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center for inviting me into the Family Beginnings. Again, I am humbled, beyond belief.
I also have my work displayed in Dr. Berg’s OB/GYN office, and We are working on displays for Gritman Medical Center, and Valley Medical Pediatrics/OB department. Yay! (I will get pictures for those soon too!)
It goes to show that hard work and dedication does pay off.
